This week, we installed a new evaporator coil, TXV (thermal expansion valve), solenoid valve, and liquid line drier on a Perlick bar cooler. The technician discovered that the TXV was restricted and the evaporator coil was in poor condition.
Upon returning with parts, the tech spoke with the manager on duty and inspected the Perlick wine cooler. He replaced the damaged evaporator coil and TXV with new components. During the installation, they found that the electronic temperature control was showing an error and not functioning properly, so they replaced it with a brand-new electronic temperature control. Next, they went to the rooftop, where they changed out the filter drier and replaced approximately two feet of damaged 3/8 copper lines in the condensing unit. After reassembling the unit, they formed a vacuum and brought it down to 750 microns. They then charged the system with recovered refrigerant and reactivated the unit. They noticed that the unit’s pressures were erratic. Upon further investigation, they determined that the refrigerant retrieved from the unit likely contained non-condensable, which was causing it to run inefficiently. They replaced the contaminated R-404 refrigerant with new virgin refrigerant and reactivated the unit.
After this change, the unit ran much more efficiently, with less erratic pressure fluctuations. The unit’s temperature upon departure was 36°F, and it was cycling on and off properly.
